Making a positive impact on early development in Africa

ChildFund’s Canadian-based member Children Believe is helping communities recall the importance of the early stages of child development through work in maternal and child health in Africa.
In the decade that has passed since the outbreak of the Syrian war on March 15, 2011, the conflict has had a disastrous effect on the country. It has destroyed businesses, hospitals and schools; left hundreds of thousands dead, injured or missing; and triggered the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time. With no solution in sight, the war’s negative effects continue to ravage the region, particularly in Lebanon.
After 14 years at the helm of ChildFund Australia, CEO Nigel Spence stepped down at the end of December 2019. The Australian Council for International Development just recently named Nigel as the recipient of its Outstanding Contribution to the Sector Award, celebrating his 40 years of commitment, enthusiasm and tireless advocacy for children. ChildFund Alliance Secretary General noted his dedication and years of service when presenting him with a parting gift in Bangkok in November, where he attended his last CEO Forum. Following the meeting, Nigel shared key reflections of his time with the organization, which he joined in 2006.
During the annual May CEO and board forum, held this year in Dublin, representatives from all 11 Alliance organizations gathered during an evening out to recognize and honor members who are rotating off the board.
Preventing Irregular Migration of Children & Youth: Early Findings of Member Initiative

ChildFund Alliance member Barnfonden is currently coordinating with three civil society organizations (CSOs) on what is their largest project funded by the European Union: “Strengthening Civil Society and Social Accountability for Improved Access to Quality, Inclusive Early Child Development (ECD) Services.”
Thousands of children and their families are in urgent need of assistance following the most devastating earthquake and tsunami to hit Indonesia in almost a decade.
More than 1,570 people have been confirmed dead and almost 200,000 people, 40% of whom are children, need urgent humanitarian assistance following a series of earthquakes that triggered a tsunami in the heavily-populated Central Sulawesi province in Indonesia.
