Poor personal and communal hygiene practices, as well as harmful sociocultural practices, are responsible for the persistence of certain diseases, which are the leading cause of mortality in the country (malaria, respiratory illnesses and diarrheic diseases). This is compounded by deficient healthcare facilities and poor-quality healthcare services characterized by insufficient medical supplies and a lack of training for healthcare professionals.

Education in Yatenga Province is characterized by a lack of adequate educational facilities, shortage of teaching material, poorly qualified teaching staff and the irregular attendance of students (due, in part, to illness or their need to work in the gold mines). Moreover, families’ poverty often means that they cannot afford to send their children to school, especially in the case of secondary education.
